Our History

Four Generations of Care - Since 1920

La Torre Orthopedic Laboratory boasts a captivating history that spans over a century, tracing its roots back to the founder, Domenico La Torre. In 1914, Domenico immigrated to the United States from Italy, having served as a soldier in World War I. With exceptional hand skills and a strong work ethic, he quickly immersed himself in the craft of custom bootmaking, particularly for individuals with physical challenges.

In 1920, Domenico established La Torre Orthopedic Laboratory in Schenectady, NY, specializing in crafting custom shoes and boots primarily for the disabled. His dedication and craftsmanship earned him an esteemed reputation in the field.

In the 1950s, Domenico's son, Richard La Torre, transformed the business into an Orthotic and Prosthetics Practice. Richard, a Korean War veteran, studied orthotics and prosthetics at The Institute for the Crippled and Disabled in New York, later furthering his education at institutions like NYU, Northwestern University, and UCLA. With a passion for innovation, Richard experimented with new applications, pioneering the use of polymers, and becoming a well-known figure in the field for his drive to improve orthotics and prosthetics.

Richard and his wife, Kay La Torre, ran La Torre Orthopedic for nearly five decades, revolutionizing various aspects of the industry. In 1961, they opened an office in Oneonta, followed by an Amsterdam office in the 1980s, expanding their reach and impact.

In the late 1990s, Timothy Lacy, Richard's son-in-law, assumed leadership as Richard retired, relocating the practice to Latham, a more centralized location in the Capital Region. Continuing the family's legacy, Tim remained actively involved in the O&P community, holding positions on state and national boards and committees. Under his guidance, La Torre Orthopedic embraced CAD/CAM technology and microprocessor knee systems, leading the way in advanced prosthetic and orthotic devices.

The family tradition continued as Zach Lacy, Tim's son, entered the O&P industry. Graduating from Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine with degrees in prosthetics and orthotics, Zach became the fourth generation to practice within La Torre Orthopedic Laboratory.

In early 2021, Zach assumed the role of President, perpetuating the family's commitment to compassionate and cutting-edge orthotic and prosthetic care. Today, La Torre Orthopedic Laboratory remains dedicated to providing the highest quality care throughout the Capital Region and beyond. With a century of history behind them, their legacy of staying at the forefront of technology and research ensures continued leadership in the field of orthotics and prosthetics for years to come.
